Virtual Health Coaching by Robyn Becker

Health Coaches have a positive impact on the improvement of an individual’s overall daily living. An effective Health Coach will develop a productive relationship with each individual to help identify unhealthy habits and work on strategies to implement the healthy habits. By making these changes in daily life, it is possible to improve overall health and reduce the risk for chronic disease, improve the body’s ability to fight off viruses and infections, and reduce early mortality.

How does Health Coaching work?

The process of working with a health coach is to have an open dialogue with your Health Coach about your goals, lifestyle behaviors (current and past), obstacles, and overall daily living activities. With each session, you will work toward breaking down what you can work on to achieve your goal(s) into very manageable changes from day to day. The main idea is to slowly incorporate these changes so that they become part of your daily living and continue building upon them. With this process, your relationship with your Health Coach will develop and foster as well.

  • help identify unhealthy habits and minimize those behaviors

  • develop strategies to implement the healthy habits

  • assist with meals and grocery shopping prep

  • provide healthy cooking ideas and tips

  • suggest nutritious choices for restaurant eating

  • create an easier environment to be physically active in

  • shift daily habits to improve sleep

  • focus on strategies to manage stress healthier

The sessions begin with 3 session packages and single sessions to continue forward. It has been shown that a minimum of 3 sessions is ideal for the individual and health coach to allow for the relationship to effectively develop.

Per peer-reviewed research articles, it has been found that Health Coaching helps people in the following ways:

Heart Disease - admission rates for cardiac symptoms in postcardiac rehabilitation patients have been shown to be lower for those working with health coaches, many healthy behaviors have been shown to improve with health coaching interventions such as better diet, increasing days of exercising, quitting smoking, and lowering alcohol consumption.

Hypertension - positive impact has been shown in overall studies

Obesity - 87% of the studies reviewed had a positive impact on weight reduction and/or BMI through positive changes in exercise and nutrition behaviors

Cancer patients – improving psychological outcomes & quality of life, some found improvements in nutritional and exercise behavior

High cholesterol management -  most studies showed improvement in some area of health such as BMI, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol and some showed a positive change in nutritional and exercise behaviors

Diabetes - improvements in interventions as a result of health coaching lasted for up to 2 years and studies overwhelmingly showed improvements in declining A1C levels with no negative results on A1C.

“20 years ago I was young and strong and active. Now I am old...but still strong and active. Much of that is the knowledge, enthusiasm, and discipline brought to my life by Robyn Becker. I would really be much more sedentary and incapable without her guidance.”

Personal Training

What is the benefit of working with a personal fitness trainer and /or health coach?

Personal fitness trainers directly impact the improvement of an individual’s exercise adherence by providing professional and individualized instruction and programs for exercise.

How does personal training impact your journey?

Ways personal trainers directly impact the improvement of an individual’s exercise adherence by:

  • providing professional instruction on how to perform exercises correctly and reduce risk for injury

  • developing and implementing individualized exercise programs for exercise (the order of exercises, how much weight, how many times to perform exercises, and how often make a difference in achieving your fitness goals)

  • offering virtual personal fitness training sessions in 15 minutes or more increments

  • consulting on how to safely use the equipment and in-home environment to optimize exercise and physical activity

  • In-person private personal fitness training sessions are available per updated guidelines (continuing to follow guidelines from multiple guidelines: Illinois Department of Public Health, California Fitness Alliance, IDEA Health and Fitness Association)

Virtual Personal Training:

Personal Fitness Training sessions have become an effective way for the fitness industry to keep up with clients. We can use the platform that you are most comfortable with: Facetime, Google hangout, Google Duo, etc.

Ways to help make the most of a virtual training session:

  • Use a device that is larger such as a laptop or tablet / iPad so that the trainer is larger on your screen (smartphones will work)

  • Find a spot that the device can sit up on its own for a view of you exercising on the floor and another position that can show a full view of you exercising while standing

  • Make sure you have one body length available of width by length in the space (think of your mat and making the square area)

  • Bring your equipment into the room you are exercising ready and available (if the equipment is stored in a different area)

The Personal Fitness Trainer will continue to:

  • Provide you with verbal cues to help ensure your form is safe

  • Demonstrate the exercises at different angles so you can follow the example

  • Modify as you go when needed

  • Get creative with ways you can perform exercises using your home furniture and items safely

“I’ve been working out with Robyn for more than 10 years. Training with her also helped me get into a pattern of regular exercise and I have been working out regularly ever since. Robyn is an effective trainer and a very caring person—she really wants you to be a healthier person.”
